The figure drew closer, its steps deliberate. Kate could now see that it was a man of old age with a cane in his right hand. He didn’t seem threatening, but his presence unsettled her. She debated whether to confront him or run away, but the dog’s calm demeanor reassured her. The dog sat by the half-open front door, his gaze fixed on the approaching man. Kate decided to wait and see what he wanted.
