Frozen in Place
The crowd quieted, their frustration replaced by unease. Dwayne stood frozen between the guard and the restless onlookers. His friends shouted at him, asking what was wrong, but he gave no response. Then slowly, deliberately, he moved—not toward them, but toward his pocket. Eyes still locked on the guard, his hand trembled slightly as he pulled out his phone.
