Among the chaotic mix of animal noises, Matthew’s ears picked up a sound that made him freeze. It was a faint, high-pitched whimper—the same sound he had heard from the puppies earlier. His eyes darted around the room, searching desperately for the source. The sound grew louder as he approached a corner of the room. Relief washed over him as he realized the puppies were nearby, but he still had to find them.
