A creaking staircase
As Emma joined him, they heard a creak from upstairs. Both froze, eyes wide, hearts racing. Someone was in the house with them. “We should go,” Emma whispered urgently, tugging at Jack’s sleeve. But Jack stood his ground, curiosity overriding caution. “We’ve come this far,” he said. “We need to know.” Slowly, they made their way up the creaking staircase. Every step they took made a loud creaking sound, easily alarming whoever was in the vicinity.
