Calling the number

Without pausing to second-guess, Megan dialed the number. Her heart pounded as it rang, each unanswered tone stretching unbearably. On the fourth, someone picked up—a young, professional voice. “Sunset Grove Nursing Home, this is Louise.” Megan froze, confused. Nursing home? When she asked for Beth, Louise’s tone softened. “Beth lives here, but she can’t take calls anymore. I’m her nurse. Who’s calling, please?” Megan’s breath caught. Her name suddenly felt heavy on her lips.
