Focussing on every sound

For the rest of the night, Jason half-dozed, hyper-aware of noises around him. He told himself it was nothing more than the cabin settling, the wood expanding and contracting.
But his subconscious didn’t believe it. Each sound seemed sharper, deliberate. Finally, fatigue overpowered fear. By the time sunlight crept in, both Jason and Emily had barely rested at all.
