Facing the day

They sat on the porch eating breakfast, the river gurgling nearby. Neither spoke of the cabin’s noises, each pretending to believe a fresh day would erase fear.
Jason forced cheer into his voice. “Fresh start,” he said, sipping coffee. Emily nodded, inhaling deeply. The forest was beautiful in daylight, but shadows still clung to her memory of the night.
