Footsteps at night
Later that evening, they crawled into bed. The forest outside hummed with nocturnal life—owls hooting, branches sighing in the wind.
Jason fell asleep almost instantly, but Emily remained awake, listening. She stiffened suddenly, convinced she heard it: faint footsteps across the porch, deliberate and steady. Her breath caught as she strained to hear more. Silence followed, heavy and unsettling.
