Reaching for the light

John pushed himself upright, his breath shallow. The sound was too deliberate, too rhythmic to be something falling. It almost sounded like footsteps—slow, forceful, deliberate. His skin prickled with unease as he slowly reached for the bedside lamp, his fingers fumbling against the switch before finally flicking it on. The soft glow filled the room, but his chest tightened as the light did nothing to explain the noises above.
