Rigid with tension

The soft glow of the lamp illuminated his bedroom, but the light did nothing to stop the noises above him. The thumping continued for a few more moments before suddenly going still. Silence filled the air, but John’s body remained rigid with tension. His pulse drummed in his ears as he strained to listen. Every muscle was tight, waiting, bracing for another sound from the dark, unseen attic above him.
