Descending carefully
The two friends descended slowly, step by careful step. The slope was loose, and dirt shifted beneath their boots, but the ground held steady enough. They braced themselves with every movement, staying alert. As they reached the bottom of the sinkhole, the air around them changed. It was heavier and full of a strange smell. Charles paused, sniffed the air, and wrinkled his nose. “Do you smell that?” he asked. Tom nodded once. “Rotten eggs.”
