The shaking seemed to last forever. Each second felt stretched as time had slowed down. Charles gripped the wooden doorframe tightly, bracing his body as the quake sent fresh jolts through the floor. His breathing was sharp and uneven, and his heart was pounding in his chest. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the rumbling ceased. But the silence that followed felt just as loud. Charles exhaled, hoping it was truly over.
