She smiled warmly and gestured toward the nearby chair. “Have a seat,” she said with practiced kindness. The man smiled back and lowered himself comfortably, already rolling up his sleeve as though he had done this countless times before. He needed blood drawn, and Emma happened to be the nurse on duty assigned for the task. It was part of her daily routine. Usually, she felt calm during these procedures, but something about this case already felt unusual.
