The door swung open before Emma could even prepare herself. Edgar stood there calmly, as though he had been waiting all along. His eyes met hers with an expression that was strangely expectant. “Hi Emma,” he said evenly, “I figured you might show up eventually.” The words startled her, leaving her breathless. He hadn’t looked surprised at all. Instead, he seemed ready—like her arrival had been a certainty rather than a question.
