The two of them settled into Edgar’s cozy living room, the air warm and familiar despite the weight of the moment. From the kitchen came the sound of a kettle whistling softly, already waiting as though prepared for her visit. Edgar returned with two steaming cups, setting one in front of her. Then, with a patient gesture, he encouraged Emma to speak first. His calmness only made her more nervous about sharing her discoveries.
