A change in attitude

Blinking quickly, Emma forced herself to stay calm. “Interesting tattoo,” she said, tone light but strained. “What does it mean?” Instantly, the man’s friendly expression dissolved. His shoulders stiffened as though he’d been caught off guard. He leaned back slightly, eyes narrowing, studying her carefully as if weighing what she might already know. The warmth vanished from his face. With that single question, the easy small talk died, leaving behind tension that changed the entire atmosphere.
