Intervening directly
By morning, the team decided to intervene more directly. They approached Mara with her favorite treats—peanut butter smeared on sweet guava pieces and even whole-boiled eggs. But she showed no interest unless the food rolled within arm’s reach so she didn’t have to move her lower body. If she could reach it, she would grab it. But she never leaned far enough for caretakers to glimpse underneath her.
