Reaching the Top

The lead marine finally scrambled over the railing and disappeared onto the deck. Another followed, gripping hard. Last came Morgan, climbing with steady determination despite the wind tugging his jacket. His fingers locked white-knuckled to the rails until he swung over. At last, wood planks pressed under his boots. The deck’s boards were split and cracked, but surprisingly they held. For the first time since launching, solid ground steadied them.
