Face into view
The response was immediate. The figure stumbled back in fear, arms shooting up defensively. In the glow of the flashlight, his face came into view—a thin, filthy man, his beard unkempt, his clothes little more than rags. His chest rose and fell with panicked breaths. And yet, one detail stood out. Dangling loosely in his hand, something metallic caught the light, swinging with each tremor. Every eye followed it, tension rising all over again.
