There was a tragic reason for their reduced number. As Andrew continued, his shoulders sagged beneath the weight of it. “The company’s negligence went far beyond the engines,” he explained. The ship’s old plumbing, brittle and corroded, began failing after years adrift. “Pipes burst everywhere,” he said, shaking his head. “Each rupture another disaster. The worst came during the last six months, when everything seemed to collapse all at once.”
