Something unexpected
While scanning the waterline, Mason froze and nudged Dylan hard while pointing to the horizon. A dark column of smoke rose straight into the morning sky, strong and steady, without any sign of drifting away. It looked completely wrong against the vast ocean and blue sky. They exchanged a tense glance and immediately knew something was wrong. Both surfers grabbed their boards and started running down the beach.
