“The cliff walls trap everything here,” Ross continued. “The storm couldn’t move on. It just spun, pounding us day and night. Waves slammed the hull. Lightning struck the decks. The ocean turned black with foam. It went on for weeks. Longer than anything I’ve seen in forty years at sea. We tried using radios, flares, even makeshift rafts—but nothing got through. Nothing worked.”
