Closer Still

The sound of hooves stopped, and silence pressed in. Andrew’s breath quickened. He didn’t know how close the reindeer was, but he could feel it now—like a presence looming just ahead. His body screamed at him to look, to check. Yet he kept his eyes clenched shut, fighting the urge. The silence grew heavier than sound, stretching unbearably. Then he heard it—the deep, steady breath of the animal, right in front of him.
