Opening His Eyes

Andrew knew he couldn’t stay blind forever. Slowly, carefully, he let his eyelids part. His vision adjusted—and there it was. The reindeer’s enormous snout hovered just above his own nose, its nostrils flaring with every breath. He watched the vapor of its exhale fogging in the cool air. The force of it was so strong, his cap nearly shifted on his head. The animal was studying him with unsettling intensity.
