With deliberate care, Andrew rose slowly to his feet. The reindeer didn’t move, its dark eyes tracking him calmly. Now standing, Andrew reached out and placed his hand gently against its shoulder. Beneath the fur, the animal radiated warmth, and he could feel its heartbeat thudding steadily. It was surreal—standing next to a wild creature that should have fled or fought but instead allowed his touch. It felt like standing beside a living spirit.
