Heavy Hooves

The next sound made his chest tighten. A sharp clacking, then another. The echo of hooves striking the road carried across the empty street. There was rhythm in the sound, steady, deliberate, and each step landed closer than the last. The reindeer was moving toward him. Andrew kept his eyes squeezed shut, listening intently. Clack. Clack. Clack. Each beat seemed to reverberate inside his ribs, pulsing through his body.
