The locked doors

They moved cautiously, flashlights slicing through the darkness as they descended toward the lower floor. The hallway stretched out before them, eerie in its silence, the air cooler with every step. Their shoes clicked lightly against the wooden floor, the sound too loud in the empty space. Then they froze. From the shadows ahead came shuffling, scurrying noises, faint yet deliberate. The sound seemed to come from the section with the locked doors.
