Summoning courage, Arthur stepped forward until he was face-to-face with the middle door. He raised his hand and knocked, just once, the sound sharp in the silence. “Hello?” he called, voice low but steady. For a heartbeat, nothing happened. The house seemed to hold its breath. Then it came—an ear-splitting scream, raw and high, exploding from behind the wood. Rose shrieked too, stumbling backward as the sound tore through the hall.
