They didn’t wait to question it. Panic surged through them, and they ran—up the stairs, across the hallway, and straight into their bedroom. Arthur slammed the door shut, twisting the lock with shaking hands, while Rose yanked the curtains closed as though blocking out the world itself. They collapsed onto the bed, holding each other so tightly it hurt, their hearts hammering as though the house itself was chasing them.
