Rose’s skin prickled at her words. “So you’re saying it was never supposed to be sold?” she asked cautiously. The neighbor gave a slow, sad nod. “We all thought it was better that way. The house carried too much sorrow, too many unfinished stories.” She sighed. “But apparently we were wrong. Somehow, they managed to put it in your hands.” The weight of her words settled like ice in Rose’s stomach.
