What Waited Inside

The splintered wood gave way, and the door swung inward. Rose and Arthur froze in shock. Behind it wasn’t dust or emptiness but a furnished living space—complete with rugs, framed pictures, and even a small kitchen. And sitting there, as if waiting for them, were two frail figures. Elderly, wrinkled, and impossibly alive. They looked up with wide eyes and trembling voices. “You’ve found us,” they said in unison. The couple could hardly breathe.
