The woman continued, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. “The company wouldn’t stop harassing us. Our own relatives joined in, circling like vultures. They ruined our lives, left us with nothing. So we did the only thing we could.” She paused, letting the words hang. “We faked our own deaths—and stayed right here.”
