The breadcrumb idea

Finally, David remembered an old trick. He hurried back inside and grabbed a bag of breadcrumbs from the kitchen. Returning to the roof, he scattered small pieces on the ground, making a gentle trail toward him. The pigeon tilted its head, considering the offer, then stepped forward cautiously. Slowly, it inched closer, picking at each crumb with small, careful movements until it was close enough.
