The tunnel floor felt surprisingly even under his boots, almost like it had been leveled intentionally. He saw metal hooks drilled into the walls at regular intervals along the sides. Maybe ropes or cables had been strung there at some point. All these clear identifiers that this wasn’t just a natural cave didn’t make the nerves in Thomas’s body any less, though—quite the opposite.
