Thomas walked slowly around it, his hand reaching out to touch the smooth rail. It felt solid, as if it had been there for years, yet the forest floor below looked freshly disturbed. There was no roof or platform above, no building that the stairs belonged to. It simply started on the mossy ground and climbed into the open air without explanation.
