He squinted hard, trying to memorize every detail of the bird: the shimmering feathers, the strong legs, and that regal crest atop its head. For a moment, James felt a wave of curiosity push back the fear. He had always loved reading about strange creatures as a kid, flipping through dusty animal encyclopedias. But no book had ever shown anything like this.
