Gravity of the situation

She turned toward Mark, her eyes wide with fear and disbelief. He swallowed hard, finally realizing the full gravity of what they were facing. There was no joking it away, no pretending it might be nothing. Together they sat frozen, the clock ticking louder than usual. Every creak of the house, every distant sound outside, felt sharper. The tension clung to the kitchen air as they waited for approaching sirens.
