A silent wait

The next fifteen minutes crawled by at a glacial pace, stretching unbearably as though the night itself conspired against them. Linda pressed her forehead against the cool glass of the kitchen window, staring into the dark garden that once felt safe and inviting. Now every shadow seemed sinister. A simple rustle of leaves was enough to make her jolt back, heart hammering in her chest. Her nerves were pushed to the edge.
