First Strikes

Thomas swung his ice pick, and the sharp crack echoed into the night. Chips flew as the metal sank into the frozen wall. Greg followed close behind, boots gripping with crampons. The first few meters felt manageable, but the silence was heavy. Every breath came out in clouds that froze instantly. Neither man spoke much—just the steady rhythm of picks striking ice, pulling themselves higher, inch by inch.
