Thomas steadied his breathing and looked from the spreading crack to the man’s ruined face. “We’re getting off this thing,” he said. “Then we call real help.” Greg nodded, already coiling rope. The man pressed a hand to the ice as if apologizing to it, then pushed off to stand. “Take the book,” he said, tapping the journal. “Show them.” Thomas slid it inside his jacket. They turned toward the edge together.
