The Right Thing

On his porch, Thomas sat with Greg, mugs of steaming coffee warming their hands. The town stretched quiet behind them, safe and whole. Out at sea, nothing stirred but the endless horizon. “We did the right thing,” Greg said simply. Thomas nodded, a small smile tugging at his lips. The memory of the groaning ice still lived in his mind, but it no longer scared him. Their world was safe again.
