Unexpected response

Judith stepped down the last stair, rubbing her eyes with the corner of the blanket still wrapped around her shoulders. Bob motioned to the counter with a grin. “Look at that carrot,” he said. She blinked, stepped closer, and leaned in. But instead of smiling or laughing, Judith’s face tightened. Her eyes fixed on the ring, and Bob swore he saw them start to water.
