Almost caught

Then it happened. Bob stepped on a dry stick, and it cracked loudly underfoot. Judith froze. Her head turned like a deer in headlights. Bob’s heart skipped. He dropped to one knee behind a clump of ferns and didn’t move a muscle. Judith stood there for nearly a full minute. Then, slowly, she kept walking — this time more cautious, but still moving in the same direction.
