Something shiny

Bob grabbed the carrot bunch at its leafy top, intending to toss it aside. But when he lifted it, something shiny flashed in the morning light. Bob paused, turning the cluster of roots in his hand. One of the larger carrots had grown around something — a tight metallic band wedged snugly into its midsection. “What the…” he muttered, brushing off the dirt with his thumb.
