As the winch hauled the object higher, its outline broke through the water. Thick sheets of barnacles sloughed off, releasing a greasy oil slick. Then sunlight bounced off faint patches of golden metal, shimmering beneath grime. A collective gasp rose from the deck. Felix stumbled back, nearly falling over rope coils. Harper gripped the rail tightly, stunned. “It’s bigger than I expected,” he whispered, his voice barely audible over the creaking crane.
