The alarm

At 1:00 a.m., Harper awoke to the shrill beeping of his personal security monitor. Its red light flashed furiously. Groggy, he rubbed his eyes, then froze. One camera at the facility showed movement. His heart lurched into his throat. He hoped for a raccoon or stray bird tripping the sensors, but deep down, dread already coiled inside him. Something was wrong, and he knew it immediately.
