Boat killers

For years, their small patrol office fielded countless complaints from sailors and fishermen about mysterious collisions. Ships had been slamming into objects hidden beneath the waterline, especially near shallow shorelines where detection was tricky. Most hazards were too small for standard ship sonars to pick up, so crews ran straight into them. Captains grimly nicknamed these hazards “boat killers,” because repairs were costly, and some vessels never sailed again after being damaged.
