Ready to start

“Everyone ready?” Harper whispered as he stepped quietly out of the truck. The group gave small, grim nods. Before he could say more, a pair of sheriff’s cruisers rolled up behind them, headlights switched off to keep the approach hidden. Officers slipped out of the vehicles with trained precision, their movements silent and smooth. No one spoke as the lawmen joined them. The air was heavy, every breath carrying expectation.
