When Kathy stepped forward, it suddenly approached, nuzzling her leg affectionately. “Incredible,” Harris whispered, scribbling notes. “They retain human parent–child bonds even after months of growth.” Kathy crouched and stroked its rigid back, tears pricking her eyes. “It’s okay now,” she murmured. But then Harris’s expression changed as his gaze shifted behind it.
