At the threshold

Kevin stood frozen at the newly opened entrance, paralyzed with indecision. The wide gate and whirring escalators almost seemed to beckon him inside, inviting like an open mouth, yet the endless descent into shadows twisted his stomach with dread. He glanced nervously over his shoulder at the silent forest. “Hello?” he called, voice breaking slightly. “Anyone down there?” His words echoed faintly, swallowed by darkness, carrying no reply. The silence pressed heavier with every passing second.
